The story on Habitat for Humanity was my first work with infographics. The graphic was part of a project that included building a website on Dream Weaver. With my two partners, we covered the building of the 100th Habitat for Humanity home in Columbia, Mo. We focused on the people who have helped build the homes, the people who have received the homes, and the impact it has had throughout the city. The graphic below showcases all of the homes built in the city. We took photos of each house, and then displayed where in the city the houses were built. Because so many of the houses were clustered close together, we had to insert the blue blocks which can be clicked on to zoom in on the specific neighborhood.
Habitat improves homes, retains affordability
At Newsy, I developed a video on the possible leak of the secret Coca-Cola recipe. I gathered information from around the web to provide people with the different information they could find on the topic. After researching and writing a script, I edited the video in Final Cut Express to make it more visually appeasing to the viewer.
At KOMU-8, the NBC affiliate for mid-Missouri, I helped a reporter enhance his story by adding photos to complement his video element. I aided the reporter in finding sources and reporting on a story about a fire in nearby Boonville, Mo. A popular restaurant had burned down, and people were unaware what the owner's next step would be. Taking the photos proved to be more difficult then expected because much of the building was blocked off by yellow police tape. I was able to walk around to the back of the building, and there I found more interesting shots for the viewer to see of the wreckage.
For KBIA, the NPR affiliate for mid-Missouri, I helped a fellow reporter on his show, the Business Beat. The other reporter, Nick Adams, introduces the show, and my story on the business incubator at State Fair Community College leads off the show. At first, I interviewed two of the professors using the incubator at the college, but more reporting was needed. Luckily, the college had a tenant for the new incubator, and I was able to contact him. He took me to his current working space, and walked me through the process of his incubator. Through this story, I learned the importance of digging deeper to find sources and how to use the people around you to find natural sound for an audio piece.
Business Beat: September 28, 2011
State Fair Community College received a $1.8 million grant last week for the construction of their new business incubator.
KBIA’s Derek Klein explains why the incubator will create jobs for Sedalia as well as hands on experience for the college’s students.
The Columbia Missourian multimedia section allows readers the rare opportunity to watch video on newspaper's website. At the Shelter Insurance fountain lighting festival, I spoke with different people about how the festival means different things to them. I also realized the importance in a diversity of sources. Children and adults can have different opinions and stories that can be just as compelling as the other.
